Requiem

By Simone Nathan Like many shy people, she had the most radiant smile. It not only curved her lips but it also shone from her hazel eyes. Even her abundant blond curls seemed to dance, especially as she waggled her shoulders in a joyful little gesture when she was really tickled about something. I want to keep the memory of her smile alive for the rest of my life, to remind me how precious and uncertain life and friendship can be. She was found alone in her large in-ground swimming pool and there are no good answers as to how this 51-year-old mother could be gone from us. She was an entrepreneur, building her little real-estate empire on rental properties. She was interested in helping lower income families find safe and affordable housing. To hold costs down, she worked on her properties herself, getting contract help only as a last resort. She scraped and painted, roofed and plumbed, mowed and weed-whacked her handful of multi-family units as well as her own large rural home. She allowed late rents a little too easily for her accountants comfort, but felt that the people she selected to be her tenants were worth the risk. She looked for working singles who really tried; for struggling families; for those who had faced financial blows but were still credit-worthy. Although she came from a family of great wealth and prestige, she lived far enough away and so simply that most who knew her never made the connection. Nor did she encourage any kind of recognition. In addition to the tragedy of her death, there will be added the suffering of uncertainty by these families who sheltered under her wing. She had made a handwritten will. But it lacked the two necessary witness signatures that would have made her wishes binding. Now, those whom she wanted to share her personal collections from around the world, souvenirs of her compassion and zest, will not receive them. Because she died intestate, without legally recognized directions for the distribution or care of her assets, the distribution of her estate will be guided by the actions of state-appointed attorneys and processes. She had begun to trust my friend and financial advisor, and was gradually expanding her sensibilities about asset protection. Partly because she was so shy, partly because he does not ever rush his clients, partly because good planning takes some time, she did not have the appropriate protections for her small business. She never got the time, though she had the clear and expressed interest. In addition to her real estate concerns, for pleasure and relaxation she had developed a creative business. She sculpted carpet in a workshop on her own property. It was physically demanding additional hard labor, rolling out the heavy materials, cutting the tough fibers, seaming them into place with heat and sheer strength, but her custom clients thought her efforts were well worth while. Some pieces had even been used in feature films. An area business expressed interest in carrying her work, and in having her represent their interests to her customers. She belonged to a small-business network and was planning a summer party around her pool to celebrate their mutual successes. No one yet knows the details of her drowning. We do know we are not the same without her; without her tremendous love of life, passion for travel, jazz and world-music; without her curiosity about all the great religions of the world, especially Eastern traditions. Without that gorgeous smile. In her great gentleness, she overlooked herself, and in doing that, exposed those under her wings, including her own dearly-loved son. May her abrupt loss be a life lesson to other small business owners who make excuses for lack of financial planning. Please take the time you have; it is literally, the only time you get. Natural Anti-Depressants - St Johns Wort, Kava Kava And Lemon Balm

By Jason Ladock Depression is a much bigger and widespread problem than many would believe. It is estimated that more than 1 in 20 Americans will develop depression in the next 12 months but most sufferers attempt to hide the problem from friends, family and physicians. This makes it incredibly difficult to diagnose unless you are specifically looking for the symptoms. Most sufferers find it difficult to diagnose depression and often attribute it to “feeling a bit down”. There is a big difference between feeling down and having depression. If you or someone close to you is suffering from depression it is important to see a doctor as soon as possible. The Safe Use Of Natural Remedies As well as psychological and medical treatment there are also a number of natural remedies that can help to eliminate or, at least, reduce stress and depression. Introducing these supplements, vitamins or nutrients into your diet it can be possible to avoid prolonged depression. Always check for interactions with any prescription drug you may be taking and, if necessary, consult your physician to ask their opinion of a particular natural remedy and whether you are safe to take it. St Johns Wort St Johns Wort is one of the most popular and effective of herbs to help combat depression. It has become increasingly popular over the last few years, as more and more people have been made aware of its effectiveness. St Johns Wort inhibits monoamine oxidase, a chemical within the human body that is known to encourage depression. However, St Johns Wort does much more than this. It can help to restore self-esteem, confidence and regular sleeping patterns making it not only useful for beating depression but restoring physical health as well. It also increases appetite and restores interest in life. St Johns Wort is available in capsule, tea, tincture and oil form. There are some recorded precautions that need to be taken when considering taking St Johns Wort. Cases of photosensitivity in those with fair skin have been reported so care should be taken in the sun. You should also avoid combining St Johns Wort with cold and flu remedies as well as other prescription based anti depressants. Avoid using St Johns Wort if pregnant or breast-feeding. Kava Kava Kava Kava is another excellent product that can help to beat stress and anxiety. It is particularly effective in the battle against physical stress. Kava Kava promotes feelings of calm relaxation without the drowsiness that can be associated with prescription drugs and even other herbal remedies. Depending on the patient, feelings of euphoria and elation may also be experienced but this is experienced in the minority of cases. Lemon Balm Due to its calming aroma and effects, lemon balm is also popular as a herbal anti depressant. Lemon balm has been used for centuries as an antibacterial ointment and also as an infusion or a tea to help calm nerves and settle patients. Lemon balm can easily be grown in gardens throughout the world and by tearing the leaves, adding honey and hot water the perfect, natural relaxant can be made. A Final Word On Natural Remedies Nature produces many different herbs and more than a fare share of these can help with depression, stress and anxiety. While some care should always be taken regarding drug interactions and the misuse they are generally considered safe for regular consumption and use. If you are in any doubt then consult your physician; something you should definitely do if you are taking any form pf prescription drug. Gray Hair - Step By Step Color Guide To Dye Gray Hair

By Terri Bennett Had enough of standing in front of the mirror and plucking out your sneaky, little gray hairs that seem to be sprigging-up more and more. Well I am going to help you decide what color is best for you and your hair and guide you along with an easy step by step guide to getting rid of gray hair. 1. First of all you need to decide how much of your hair is gray, look at your hair and estimate a percentage of gray. 2. Use a semi-permanent if you estimate your hair is around 20 percent gray. The semi-permanent will begin to fade after 6-12 washes. So your hair will require frequent re-coloring if you shampoo your hair everyday. 3. If your hair is around 50 percent gray then I would opt for a longer lasting semi-permanent, often called a quasi. These colors will last roughly around 24-28 washes. So if quasi isnt labeled on the box then look to see how many weeks the color will last which will be on the box. If your hair is more than 50 percent gray and you are looking to color most or all of your gray hair then you will need a permanent dye. If you are more than 50 percent gray and you would prefer a semi-permanent then that is okay but you should know that all of your gray will not be covered, however some clients actually prefer this as: A small amount of gray left which looks very natural. People that see your hair will just assume you dont color your hair because they can see a little gray, when in actual fact most of it is covered! You dont need to do touch-ups (roots) as often. Semi-permanents are kinder on the hair and leave hair with an incredible shine and in great condition. 4. If you decide that your hair needs a permanent dye then I would advise doing a strand test. One reason for this is to check your hair is compatible with the chemicals in the color. Secondly, to assess the result of the color. Cut off about a of an inch of hair from underneath, near your neck and bind one end with some tape. Mix a small amount of the hair color solution from the directions on the box. Place the hair swatch in the solution and leave for least amount of time according to the box. (Its generally around 40 minutes). Although do keep checking for the desired color, take a note of the time it took. How to choose the right shade Choose colors that closely match your natural color. The natural color youre looking for is not the gray; its the darker strands in your hair. Once you have determined your natural hair color consider a shade darker for your chosen color as the color can appear lighter than expected, and will most likely fade a little due to washing and UV rays from the sun. You will need to regularly touch-up your roots, around 6-8 weeks depending on your hair growth. I would suggest coloring your hair on a Saturday morning, if possible, so you have time get used to your new look before you go back to work. Give yourself plenty of time to apply the color as it may seem tricky at first. Take your time and apply neatly over your hair. Be especially neat around your hair line as the color will stain to a certain degree. However there are ways to prevent bad staining by apply a small amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around your hair hairline and the tops of your ears and around the back of your neck. Make sure you dont get any petroleum jelly on your hair as this will act as a barrier against the color, which means you will be left with patches of hair uncolored. Lay an old towel over the bathroom and wear an old top. Wear fitted protective gloves and now you can begin the coloring process. Follow the directions on the box exactly. Set the timer and sit back and relax while you wait for your hair to develop. Top 3 Donts When Coloring your Hair! 1. If you have used a Henna Color, make sure you never use any Chemical products on it i.e. Color and Perm solution as the chemical reaction will be extremely damaging to your hair, scalp and skin. You will have to wait until it grows out. 2. Some color-enhancing products can be quite irritable to the scalp so always test on very small amount before hand. (back of your neck or behind your ear) 3. Avoid chlorine for a few days after coloring, this could change the color. I Am Sick, But How Do I Know If I Am Contagious?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Anne_Clarke] Anne Clarke Many people really feel as though they can not miss work unless they absolutely have to because of the necessity of their hourly income. Others would simply prefer not to stay in bed all day but are still concerned about getting other people sick especially if he or she works with children. Digital home thermometers are the very best kinds of thermometers you can use to determine how serious your illness is. There are few ways to know for certain whether you have just a cold, the flu, or any other kind of disease without going to see a doctor. Although likely, for example: if you have a problem such as a URI (upper respiratory infection) it can be possible to spread the infection especially if a fever presents. If you feel ill but are not febrile (in other words, if you are not running a fever) you will probably not spread whatever it is that you have to others. The best way to determine what to do is to check your temperature with a digital thermometer. Nonetheless, one should exercise this little stay at home or go sickness test with care. There are several different kinds of cold and pain medications that contain anti pyretic active ingredients. Despite the fact that they make people feel better, medications such active anti pyretic ingredients can fool you, especially when you are trying to determine whether or not you are contagious. The best way to determine if you will be contagious is to take your temperature before you take anti pyretic drugs. Only when the anti pyretic is out of your system can you discover whether or not you are contagious. If you are still running a fever while you have an anti pyretic in your system it is wise to call or visit your doctor. With an anti pyretic drug in your system there should be no fever and when there is your simple cold could turn out to be something much more serious. Digital thermometers are much more helpful for determining your actual body temperature, than other, older kinds of thermometers. So, with a digital thermometer you can find out, when you are ill, not only how ill you are, but also if you will be a danger to others. Anne Clarke writes numerous articles for websites on gardening, parenting, fashion, medical information and the environment. Her background includes home dcor, and gardening. A Basic Model Aircraft Workshop

By Sandra Robinson These days many beginners enter the hobby with a ARTF(almost ready to fly) model, they are often reluctant to build there first model airplane, thinking the building will be difficult, the tools complex and they will need a large area to set up a workshop and will need to invest a large sum of money. Nothing could be further from the truth, there are advanced modelers who have devoted entire rooms or have erected workshops in which to enjoy there hobby, but the basic model airplane can easily be built in a corner of any home, I personally have built many models myself on a board on the kitchen table. When I built my first model all those years ago I did not have a clue,It was built on a old dining room table without a building board and the parts where held in place while the glue (balsa cement in those days) dried by window glazing tacks knocked in with a small hammer, luckily as I said the table was old and I lived to tell the tale, However I hope this article will guide a beginner through the setting up of a simple but adequately equipped model workshop, sufficient for the construction of most model kits and many scratch built models as well,Where possible I will show how some common household items and a few basic tools available in the larger DIY store can substitute for more expensive modeling tools Where specialized tools are available or desirable, hopefully this article will help in choosing which of several tools will give the biggest value The Workspace The minimum space needed to build the average R/C trainer is a area of about 5 feet by 5 feet,While it might be useful to have a larger area, this space will be adequate to construct most free flight, control line and radio controlled model airplanes, a place near a electrical socket and well lighted being the main points to consider, also it needs to be somewhere where it would not be a problem if wood scraps, sanding dust or glue ended up on the floor and can easily be cleaned up, A large carpet remnant or a old rug under the worktable would prove helpful here. The Building Board A good flat building board is the most important and basic tool, fortunately, it is also one of the least expensive. Although there are factory made building boards available, thousands of models have been built on a standard drawing board . A good store bought alternative is a cheap cork faced notice board from a local store. To keep the building board straight and free of warps, bows or twists, the building board should be laminated to a sheet of 3/4″ Medium Density Fiberboard (“MDF”) Ply or Melamine faced chipboard could also be used. Such a laminated building board can be easily picked up and moved out of sight if the workspace needs to be cleared for other activities. This is what I use personally glued together with PVA wood glue and screwed around the frame, the frame can be removed from the notice board if you wish, should it get in the way. A worktable will also be needed to set the building board upon. Many modelers have discovered that a card table set up in a corner is a perfectly adequate workbench for building smaller models. Others have used a kitchen or dining room table, but this can be a source of annoyance for other family members. Ideally, there will be a corner of a room where a workbench can be set up on a semi-permanent basis, and if there is room, a hollow core door resting on strips of wood screwed to the wall makes a very nice, sturdy and stable modeling workbench. If a built in workbench is not possible, but space is available, setting a door on top of a couple of trestles works well If a hollow core door is used as a bench top, be aware that the quality of these doors varies. The cheapest of the hollow core doors have a cardboard honeycomb core, which does not adequately support the outer veneer layers. It is best to shop around for a better quality door with a wood lattice core. These tend to stay flat over time. Ideally, the worktable should be sturdy enough that a person can sit on it without damaging it, but with a portable worktable this may not be possible. If a permanent workshop is set up, an L or U shaped set of work tables along two or three adjoining walls makes an excellent family craft center where two or more people can work together, or on separate projects. These tables can be made out of hollow core doors or doubled layers of particle board or MDF, supported by wall strips and 2″x2″ softwood legs. The workbench or table must be stable and provide a flat, clear space where the building board can be set up and left undisturbed. Basic Tools To get started with nearly every model airplane kit, some basic tools will be needed. These are the tools a builder must have before starting to build. Dressmaker’s Pins Dressmaker’s pins will be needed to pin parts together and to pin them to the building board. They come in several sizes, and in packages of 50 or 100. The smaller ones will be better for pinning the parts together. Bigger ones will work better for pinning large parts down to the building board. Since they are quite cheap, the best thing to do is get a package each of large and small. Hobby Knife or Utility Knife Most of the cutting required to build the average R/C trainer can be done with a hardware store utility knife. The STANLEY 99E retractable utility knife comes with enough spare blades to finish a plane. Both the knife and the blades are readily available at variety and hardware stores. An X-Acto knife handle and a supply of #11 blades is nice to have as a second knife, but the blades are more expensive and sometimes hard to find. Swan-Morton produce a flat handle modeling knife that wont rool away and both the knife and blades are reasonably cheap, Modern kits have many pre-cut parts, so an official hobby knife is not mandatory, and the utility knife will come in handy for many household chores as well. A cutting board will also be needed and usally I use a hardboard offcut Sandpaper An assortment of sandpaper will be needed. an assortment of five sheets that has Very Fine (220) Fine (150) and Medium (100). One of these packages and a package of coarse (60) should be bought. A good sanding block can be made from a piece of scrap softwood Ruler A twelve-inch ruler is a necessity. A grade school ruler is sufficient, but a good quality steel ruler is much preferred. It is also very useful to have a steel yardstick, which does double duty as an accurate straightedge. An architects or engineers scale, the triangular kind, will come in handy for later models. Clamps It is possible to buy clamps esecialy for model use,but for the most part you can get by with a good supply of rubber bands and some clothes pegs Glue A stock of several types of glue should be kept. These are the types commonly and traditionally used for model building PVA PVA or woodworking glue works very well for building model airplanes. It has the advantage of being water based and therefore less toxic. Also, PVA Glue is slow drying and less likely to cause warps and does a good job of gluing the woods used in model airplanes. For most purposes, white PVA glue is stronger than the woods used, and is easy to clean up. The yellow glues tack up and dry more quickly, but they are more expensive and more difficult to clean up. Epoxy Glue Thirty-Minute Epoxy Glue is traditionally used to glue firewalls to fuselages, install landing gear mounts and join together wing halves. It is fuel proof and very strong. Cyanoacrylate Glue Cyanoacrylate glues are sometimes called CA or Super Glue. CA comes in three varieties; regular, sometimes called thin, medium, and thick. CA is very fast setting, and strong. It is also relatively expensive. To use CA, the joint must be fabricated very carefully, and the parts are clamped or held tightly together. A drop of CA is placed on the joint, which is almost instantly welded together. This is convenient, however, if is care is not take, the glue will penetrate through the pores of the wood and stick clamps or fingers to the model airplane. CA gives off a fine, smoky mist that can really sting eyes and noses. These fumes can cause severe allergic reactions. Some people build up a heightened chemical sensitivity to CA over time. It is important to have good air circulation in the building area if any possibly toxic glue is used, but this is especially important with CA. Covering Iron Most beginning modelers will cover airplanes with plastic iron on, heat shrink film. This is the cheapest and fastest way to get a nice, fuel proof finish on models. If a lot of planes are going to be built, the builder will want to get a specially made hobby iron and also a hobby heat gun, however, a plain laundry iron can be used in a pinch, and is fine for the first plane. Inexpensive irons can be bought at a thrift store by those on a tight budget. I personaly use a small traveling iron obtained fro Argos Secondary Building Tools There are some other tools that may be needed to finish an airplane. They may not be needed right away, but they will come in handy before construction is complete. Combination Square A six-inch combination square is very useful to line up the pieces as everything is glued together. A combination square has a steel ruler that slides back and forth. It will help in making accurate 45-degree and 90-degree corners, and to mark out repeated measurements. If a six-inch combination square cannot be found, a 12-inch can be used but this will be awkward to use on model airplanes. Protractor The plain, school variety of protractor in the familiar semi-circular shape is all that is required for laying out and measuring angles. Compass or Dividers The school type compass is adequate for laying out circles and arcs. However, a set of good quality wing dividers also does a nice job of transferring measurements from drawings to wood when building more advanced models. Drafting Triangles. Although these are not strictly necessary, they are very helpful to line up parts and for making sketches of assemblies. Standard 45-degree and 30-60 degree triangles are very useful in all types of layouts. Razor Saw The razor saw is another tool that is not strictly necessary, A razor saw makes much faster straight or angle cuts in balsa and hardwood stock.you can get a razor saw blade that fits the STANLEY knife mentioned above Coping Saw A coping saw is also not strictly necessary, but for sawing out irregular shapes in thick balsa or in aircraft plywood, it is much faster than using a knife. . Screw driver Both straight and Phillips tips will be needed. Small Allen keys may also be needed, Over time, builders will probably acquire a set of miniature or jewelers screwdrivers and other miniature tools for fastening nuts, bolts and screws. Pliers A set of heavy-duty pliers does a variety of jobs in the model airplane shop, from bending landing gear to forming push-rod ends. The best quality sets will have a diagonal cutter that is strong enough to cut music wire up to 3/32″. Long Nose Pliers Long nose pliers are very useful for reaching into tight model airplane spaces. Vice Everyone needs one good vice. For models, a small machinists or blacksmith’s vice with three inch jaws and a small anvil is great for forming and shaping light metal parts. I have found a good source of model tools to be Squires Tools ,100 London Road, Bognor Regis, West Sussex, PO21 1DDwho supply tools for both models and crafts who can supply everything listed here plus lots more Drill A drill is very nearly a necessity, but will probably only be needed for a few holes on the first airplane. It is placed in this category because the builder suffice by borrowing one. Eventually, however, the builder will want to get a variable speed reversing drill. A corded type will work, as will the higher voltage cordless drills, but a small low voltage cordless one is very convenient and is designed for the modeller and craftsperson,. Hand powered drills will work too, but good ones are getting hard to find, and are awkward to use and quite expensive. A 13 drill bit assortment, in sizes from 1/16″ to 1/4″ will probably handle every hole on the first airplane. You may at a later date depending on your circumstances wish to add power tools and Taps and a Tap wrench, Dies,a palm sander and so on. One item that as become quite popular is the Dremel Moto-Tool,these hand held motors can drive a variety of attachments from drill bits to cut of wheels, grinders and sanding attachments and are ideal for the model maker A builder’s budget guides how the shop is set up but many championship models have been built on card tables with a minimum kit of hand tools. Coloring Books, Crayons, Coloring Pages and Other Toys for Kids on Road Trips

By Gail Leino Long road trips can be a big hassle, especially when youve got a couple of kids in the backseat fighting with each other, and theyll definitely need some distractions like coloring books, crayons, and coloring pages. Average eight hours a day of driving and negotiation with the kids to stay calm in the backseat and its enough to make you not only stressed out, but even sick. So prepare ahead of time and make sure that youve got enough distractions for the kids so that the trip will be uneventful in terms of fighting. Siblings dont usually like sharing stuff so youll need at least two of everything. Two sets of crayons, two sets of coloring books. And its probably best to make sure that both sets are exactly the same so that they dont get into an argument over the perception that Billys coloring book is better than Caseys. Some cool crayons that you can find are the metallic or glitter ones. Kids love playing with the new media that manufacturers are coming out with these days. Gel pens are even good for the kids to play with. Hopefully youll put a blanket down in the backseat so that the kids wont get ink or crayon wax on the upholstery while youre driving. Before the road trip take the kids to the stores so they can pick out their road trip coloring books and other activities. This is an even better choice because the kids will settle beforehand which type of activity is most interesting and the best for them. Tell them that youll hold onto the items until the road trip and theyll spend the time until the trip in anticipation of playing with their new toys. Theyll be that much more likely to stay involved with their coloring books and crayons on the trip rather than on each other, so youll be that much more relaxed while on the drive. Gail Leino is known throughout the internet world as Mrs. Party. She has become the internet’s leading authority on selecting the best possible party supplies with clever themes. Her simple party planning approach demostrates how to use proper manners while teaching etiquette with organizational skills. She shares lots of interesting fun facts. Should We Shack Up? A Gay Lovers’ Pre-Cohabitation Reality Check

By Brian Rzepczynski Introduction Particularly with the legal sanctions that exist against gay marriage, moving in and living together is a big step and important rite-of-passage for a gay couple. It can symbolize the development and maturation of their relationship, as well as express the sense of a deepening commitment to each other and desire for more definition as partners. However romantic it may seem to shack up, its a huge life-changing decision that shouldnt be made lightly or on impulse. It requires a lot of forethought and preparation or you could be setting yourselves up for a lot of drama, stress, and pain. This article will offer some tidbits of information on cohabitation and lend you some questions for contemplation to assess your true readiness for taking the plunge as live-in lovers. Then some suggestions will be made to help foster a smoother decision-making process for you and your guy. Dispel The Fairy Tale Myth So you found your Prince Charming or Mr. Right and you feel ready to take that next step by moving in together. Its a very special time to be enjoyed, however its also important to temper your excitement and let your logical mind help you determine if this is the right choice for you at this time in your life and stage of relationship with your boyfriend. There are lots of benefits to living together: saved time on travel, being able to spend more time together, increased sexual availability, improved cost-of-living, intimacy can be strengthened, etc. Beware of romanticizing this big step in your relationship though; recognize that this is a major life transition with lots of adjustments and that your life and relationship will change. Even if youve lived with someone before, like with a roommate, family, or an ex, its a completely unique experience when you live with a new significant other because the relationship dynamics, issues, and feelings are so different. You are merging together two men with different personalities, needs, habits, and lifestylesintegrating these can be stressful and challenging. However, once consolidated and you have reached an understanding and rhythm to your lives, it can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences youll ever have. Cohabitation Facts * Your relationship will change when you live together; it is a completely different entity to what you had when you were just dating. * Moving in together will not help a hurting relationship. If it was troubled before, the issues will become magnified and more trying when under the same roof 24/7. * You will have to compromise and be more flexible. How you managed your home and life when you lived solo now needs to be negotiated with anothers outlook. You will be giving up a degree of independence. * If you or your boyfriend is still in the closet and having continued coming-out struggles, living together will pose some additional challenges as it will be difficult over time to hide your relationship. You will need to be prepared to face the reactions of your family, friends, neighbors, and perhaps even your job. Pre-Move-In Questions Here are some questions you and your man could ponder as you come closer to making a decision about your living arrangements. Communicate with each other about all of these issues to ensure mutual understanding and agreement. * Why do I want to move in together? What does it mean to me? What are my motives? If its for convenience, financial security, or because you think you should do it, these are not the right reasons. Only go for it if youre comfortable with your partner, are fully committed, and are confident in your compatibility and have no doubts that youre a good fit. * What do I want to get out of living together? What are my expectations of myself and my partner? * How will we consolidate? Where will we live? How will we combine our belongings? How will we manage finances and domestics? * Is the timing right for us at this very moment? As an example, three years into my relationship with my partner, we decided to buy a home together. My condo sold first and I moved into his house awaiting its sale so wed have enough of a down payment for our new home. The problem was that his mother was living with him at the time and he came out to her just weeks before my move-in! Talk about drama! Having to live with my future mother-in-law, who was sorely bitter about my presence, and having to adapt to his two dogs who just loved to jump on my face in the middle of the night was a little much for my coping abilities. Mom and I are very close now, and Im better about dogs, but it illustrates the importance of good timing in your decision-making. What You And Your Partner Can Do For Cohabitation Success * Before you guys move in, ensure that youre completely committed to each other and the process, that youre open and honest about anything and everything and have a solid foundation of trust and mutual respect, and that you have a shared vision for your relationship and future. * Communication is key. Share with each other your fears and concerns, as well as your joys. Always keep the channels of dialogue open, regularly check-in with each other, and never keep things youre feeling bottled up inside. * Set some ground rules BEFORE you move in, defining your home climate and expectations so there are no surprises. Be flexible in sorting out who does what and mix up the roles periodically. * There will be lots of shared decision-making. Make sure the two of you have a good system in place for productive problem-solving and healthy anger management. Emphasize the positives in your relationship when things get rough. * Practice living together before you actually do by playing house. Practice domestic roles in each others separate residences or go on an extended vacation where youll constantly be together to gauge the strengths and weaknesses you see from all the togetherness. Try it on for size! Conclusion Living together can be a very fulfilling part of your relationship development, but as you can see, requires adequate readiness assessment, preparation, and planning to maximize your success. While some of the drawbacks of cohabitation are not always rosy, also realize sometimes that emotional barriers you may be erecting will need to be pushed through to make this option more viable. While moving in with my partner when I did was a nightmare, it did help facilitate both our coming-out processes and we grew more as individuals and as a couple. It also helped both our families break through their denial systems and grieving processes and helped all of us develop some new, more sophisticated relational skills that has led to a now successful family unit. It all worked out for the best and a lot of good came from it. So best of luck with your decision-makingyoull be great! 2007 Brian L. Rzepczynski WANT TO USE THIS ARTICLE IN YOUR E-ZINE OR WEBSITE? Azalea ‘Lemon Lights’

By Alan Summers Fragrant Deciduous Azalea that Blooms in Spring and Fall Some azaleas and rhododendrons occasionally bloom twice - in the fall, as well as spring, depending upon the weather. For years, breeders have been trying to amplify this repeat bloom trait to achieve azaleas and rhododendrons that will bloom reliably every fall and spring. We have trialed several of these fall blooming azaleas and the results here in Zone 6 have been disappointing, although our trials continue and we have high hopes for one new variety which we are just starting to evaluate. However, we happened upon one deciduous azalea, with no reputation for reblooming, that blooms for us reliably every fall and spring year after year. This week we are featuring that azalea, the Northern Lights hybrid ‘Lemon Lights.’ Beginning about 20 years ago, The University of Minnesota began developing a new super hardy series of deciduous azaleas called Northern Lights. Their goal was to allow gardeners in colder areas to enjoy azaleas in their gardens. This series is also known for being extremely floriferous, putting on a stunning floral show in late spring. Coincidentally, a few cultivars in the series turned out to be quite fragrant and foliar fungus resistant. ‘Lemon Lights’ has striking two-toned lemon yellow flowers which are lighter at the outer edges of the petals and deeper at the throats. The flowers emit a powerful sweet citrus fragrance. The dark, glossy foliage has excellent resistance to powdery mildew and provides a beautiful contrast to the clear yellow blooms. Fall foliage color is maroon bronze. Expect ‘Lemon Lights’ to reach 5-6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. Planting and Care Deciduous azaleas prefer more sun than evergreen azaleas, although they do best with some protection from the hottest afternoon sun. When planting ‘Lemon Lights,’ select a site with almost full sun to light shade that has well-drained, acidic soil. Azaleas have a very shallow, fibrous root system and can dry out rapidly. For that reason, be sure to water during dry periods and hot summer days. Does best in an area with well-drained soil in full sun to light shade. Do not plant too deeply; place the top of the root mass level with the soil surface. Dig a shallow hole and backfill around the plant with equal parts mixture of organic compost and the existing soil. Until established, do not allow the soil to dry out. Fertilize with Espoma’s Cottonseed Meal and Kelp Meal when planting and again every year in early spring and late fall. Hardy in zones 4-7. How Many Secretaries Does It Take To Change A Light Bulb?

By Holly Zenith Ill admit it up front. I was a lousy secretary. It wasnt for the lack of trying. It was just because it was a bad fit for me, but it took me years of being a secretary to convince myself. Other secretaries in my department could organize circles around me. They could manage a 55-line telephone with one hand, word-process a memo with the other, and do the filing with their feet. They didnt freak out when their boss dumped a three-day project on their desk with orders to have it ready in an hour. They knew when everyones birthdays were, and they remembered to change the water in the flower vase on their desk. Not me. My typing looked as if it were done by foot, calls I answered ended up on hold for years, and the filing was perpetually 6 months behind. I freaked out when my boss came within two miles of my desk. I forgot my own birthday, and my flowers were always straining desperately towards other, more nurturing, secretaries. My real problem was that I was always the victim of the Pile Syndrome. If youre a secretary or if you have any kind of paper-pushing job, you know what I mean. Youre working on the A project, and youre trying to be focused, even though your phone keeps ringing and the gal at the desk next to you wants to discuss her nephews foot fungus. (By the way, its illegal for secretaries to let their phones go to voicemail. Look it up yourself: Bylaw 213, Section 3, Paragraph A.) Your boss comes up to you and says, How are you coming along on the B project? I know I asked for it tomorrow but could I have it for my meeting in an hour? You know it will only take 10 minutes to finish off the B project, so theres no reason for to put the A project away. You put the B project right on top of the A project on your desk and set to work. The phone rings. The man on the other end is having an emergency that for some reason you are the only person on the planet who can solve. This is part of your job too customer service. In fact, the company devotes a lot of lip service to this priority. So this becomes C project, which has to happen right now. But youre really trying to whip through the B project so you can get back to the A project, which is what youre REALLY working on anyway. So theres no need to put the B or the A projects away. You put the C project right on top. The day ends while youre working on the P or the Q project, and you can barely see over the top of the pile. Everyone is upset with you because you didnt get projects A through N finished. Time management gurus would have a field day with that one. They INSIST that you must put away whatever youre not working on, and focus ONLY on what youre working on. Okay, theyre right. How many of them were secretaries? Lets take a poll. In between (and usually during) all of these projects, I was expected to schedule meetings for people who only had enough space on their calendar to inhale once. When I reported to my boss that the first mutually available opening for the people he wanted to meet with was Tuesday of 2009, my boss would say No, try again and see if you can get it for Monday of next week. I was also expected to keep track of how many paper clips the office went through in a month, whom to call when the toilet in the mens room stopped up, which travel agent could find the best rates, all of my bosss computer passwords, whose turn it was to clean out the office refrigerator, which of my bosss clients preferred communication by email, which had blue eyes, which drove a domestic vehicle, which had a toddler who was teething, and which required a wheat-free meal at luncheons. I also spent a lot of time filing defensively. My boss would accuse me of keeping too much stuff, and that I needed to only keep what was important. Then he would come up to me and ask for that piece of paper he used as a coaster in that meeting in 1995 surely I remember the one the one when that lady with the short hair made a presentation. Then he would hover over my desk while I painstakingly went through every file in my possession trying to find that piece of paper. There must be a word that combines panic and apathy. Thats the state I finally reached. I was in a constant state of panic over maintaining control over the minutia of my job, but I was apathetic because I genuinely and sincerely really didnt give a hoot. Nothing I did created any meaningful progress for myself. I filed; someone yanked the file out again, used it, and dumped it back on my desk. I typed a memo for someone else, and someone else got the credit for a great idea. I was a member of the team when it suited the department, but when it didnt suit them, I was expected to remember my place. To all of you who are efficient and wonderful secretaries, my hat is off to you. Those of us who are lousy at it really need people like you in the world. How many secretaries does it take to change a light bulb? None. She calls maintenance and they do it. Or, if shes like me, she pretends not to notice until someone else takes care of it.
